Dr. James Martin Peebles (1822–1922) was a charismatic Universalist minister, medical doctor, avid spiritualist, and globetrotter who lived to nearly 100. Based in Battle Creek, Michigan, he operated the Peebles Institute of Health, aggressively advertising 'psychic science' and herbal nostrums across national periodicals before drawing scrutiny from the AMA and postal inspectors.
