Overview
This is a classic hand-knotted Persian Sarouk rug featuring a central double-medallion on a beautifully aged rose-pink ground, framed by deep indigo and madder red borders. The intricate floral sprays and dense, curvilinear vine-work are characteristic of the highly sought-after 'Mohajeran' or American Sarouk style of the early 20th century.
Story
During the 1920s, American home decorators fell in love with Persian Sarouk rugs, but demanded a specific, rich raspberry-red color. To satisfy this massive demand, importers in New York actually hand-painted the wool of these rugs with chemical dyes after they arrived from Persia, creating the iconic 'American Sarouk' look.
Maker / Origin
Woven by skilled artisans in the Arak weaving district of Persia, these rugs were made in both home workshops and organized town cooperatives. The weavers of Sarouk were renowned for their ability to translate complex, curvilinear floral patterns into tightly knotted, exceptionally durable wool masterpieces that could withstand generations of use.
Condition & Value
The rug shows visible signs of age and wear consistent with a vintage or antique textile. There is noticeable wear to the wool pile, resulting in some lower areas, and the fringe ends show typical fraying and loss.
