Overview
This is a finely crafted circular Japanese lacquer incense box (*kōgō*) decorated in raised gold lacquer (*taka-maki-e*) and silver/gold embellishments over an all-over dense *nashiji* (pear-skin gold flake) ground. The lid depicts an elegant still life of a porcelain vase painted with a mountain landscape and pagoda resting on a low stand alongside a flowering branch, fitted with lead/tin rims (*okiguchi*).
Story
Crafted for the refined Japanese incense ceremony (*kōdō*), this palm-sized treasure layers real pulverized gold into toxic tree sap. Its clever 'picture-within-a-picture' design shows a landscape vase resting atop an altar.
Maker / Origin
While unsigned, as was standard for many traditional master lacquerers, this piece was executed by a skilled *urushi* atelier catering to tea and incense masters or wealthy samurai patrons. Master lacquerers trained for decades, often dedicating entire months of labor to a single small box.
Condition & Value
The lacquer displays visible edge wear and several areas of flaking/loss to the lacquer ground along the outer rim bevel of the lid. The interior and underside nashiji remain in attractive condition with minor surface rubbing. Lacquer loss reduces value by roughly 40-50%.
