Overview

A delicate porcelain cup decorated with vibrant, hand-painted butterflies in the Famille Rose (Fencai) palette, featuring a gilt rim. The base bears a six-character underglaze blue apocryphal Yongzheng reign mark within a double circle.

Story

During the late Qing dynasty, Chinese potters frequently painted Yongzheng reign marks on new creations. This was not meant to deceive, but rather to pay artistic homage to the golden age of imperial porcelain design.

Maker / Origin

Crafted by skilled artisans in Jingdezhen, the historic porcelain capital of China. These workshops preserved imperial-level techniques through generations, catering to both domestic elites and an eager international export market.

Condition & Value

The cup appears to be in very good condition with no visible cracks or chips. There is minor, expected wear to the gilt rim and the foot rim shows natural oxidation consistent with age. Excellent preservation of the delicate enamel colors.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues

Best Venue
