Overview

This set of ten foliate-rimmed small porcelain bowls features traditional underglaze blue brushwork depicting a bird perched on a rock amidst flora, surrounded by stylized panel borders. Known in Japan as *Kosometsuke* ('old blue and white'), this style was specifically ordered or collected by Japanese tea masters during the 17th century.

Story

In the early 1600s, Japanese tea masters fell in love with rugged, free-spirited Chinese porcelain made for export. Rather than perfection, they prized spontaneous brushwork and natural kiln imperfections, naming the style *Kosometsuke*.

Maker / Origin

Kilns in Jingdezhen produced these wares rapidly for export to Japan during the late Ming dynasty. Japanese aesthetic sensibilities heavily influenced the designs, favoring rustic charm, lobed rims, and playful motifs over pristine imperial perfection.

Condition & Value

The bowls appear intact overall with typical glaze imperfections, minor iron spots, and soft glaze wear consistent with age and use. Small rim fritting (*mushikui* or insect-bites) is common and often prized in authentic pieces. Completeness enhances value significantly.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
