Overview

A substantial 36 cm blue and white underglaze porcelain charger featuring classic Kraak-style paneled borders framing a central scene of birds among flowering branches and water. The molded scalloped rim and cobalt blue foliate cartouches reflect the iconic export wares that ignited Europe's porcelain craze during the 17th century.

Story

Dutch East India Company ships carried millions of these lightweight paneled dishes across the globe starting around 1600. Known as 'Kraak' porcelain after captured Portuguese carracks, they transformed European dining and sparked a global design revolution.

Maker / Origin

Produced by master kiln workers in Jingdezhen during the late Ming transition (or by early Arita kilns in Japan supplying the Dutch after Ming kiln disruptions). These artisans developed thin, molded bodies and compartmentalized 'fukizumi' and painted designs specifically tailored for Western and regional Asian export markets.

Condition & Value

Displays classic glaze fritting ('mushikui') around the rim and a noticeable tight hairline crack running inward across the upper rim panels. Accompanied by a fitted traditional wooden storage box (tomobako), showing it was treasured in a Japanese collection; condition defects reduce potential peak value by roughly 40-50%.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
