Overview
This is a nostalgic collection of fourteen vintage pulpboard drink coasters representing iconic casual dining chains, regional microbreweries, and historic local watering holes. The group features early branding from major chains like Outback Steakhouse and Chili's alongside defunct local legends like Fagan's in the Flats and Clyffside Brewing's Felsenbrau Beer.
Story
In 1988, Outback Steakhouse opened its very first location in Tampa, Florida, using quirky, faux-Australian imagery to capture the American imagination. These coasters trace the golden age of the casual dining boom and the early craft beer revolution, preserving the ephemeral graphic design of the places where we gathered.
Maker / Origin
These coasters were produced by commercial specialty printers for various hospitality brands. Notable inclusions are early promotional items for Outback Steakhouse (featuring a partnership with Grey Poupon), the pioneering Kona Brewing Co. of Hawaii, and Heartland Brewery, which helped kickstart New York City's craft beer scene in 1995.
Condition & Value
The coasters show varying degrees of vintage wear, including light water staining, edge scuffing, and minor discoloration consistent with actual tavern use. The Outback and Chili's examples show the most noticeable staining, while the Kona and Hard Rock Cafe pieces remain relatively clean.
