Story
Chrysanthemums and running water form a classical Japanese motif called *kikusuidou*, symbolising longevity and purification. Artisans sprinkled real gold metallic dust into wet tree-sap lacquer to create this luminous composition over a century ago.
Maker / Origin
Japanese lacquerware (*urushi*) masters trained for decades to master maki-e techniques. The creation of a single fine tray required applying dozens of thin layers of toxic urushi tree sap, drying each in humid climate chambers, and hand-polishing with charcoal.
Condition & Value
Minor edge wear and scuffing around the gilt metal rim corner consistent with age. Lacquer surface retains good sheen with clear maki-e detail; minor surface micro-scratches.
