This exquisite circular cinnabar lacquer incense container (kōgō) features high-relief carved or applied lacquer work (tsuikin / tsuisai technique) depicting traditional Ryukyuan or Chinese-style court musicians (zagaku) amidst floral sprays.
Story
Made under the royal workshop patronage of the Ryukyu Kingdom, this incense box traveled diplomatic trade routes to Japanese tea masters. Its vibrant red pigment was reserved for high ceremony and elite gifts.
Maker / Origin
Lacquer production in the Ryukyu Kingdom was supervised directly by the royal Kaizuri-bugyōsho (Office of Lacquerware). Master artisans formulated unique relief techniques to produce prestigious tribute wares for Chinese emperors and Japanese shoguns.
Condition & Value
Displays honest age wear, minor surface rubs, and a visible hairline crack/repair along the inner rim of the cover (noted with an arrow in the photos). Accompanied by a traditional brocade textile pouch (shifuku) and a fitted wooden storage box. The old rim repair reduces value by approximately 20–30% compared to a pristine example.
