Overview
This is a dramatic, hand-blown Murano art glass fish sculpture featuring a vibrant polychrome 'tutti frutti' or 'end of day' core encased in heavy clear crystal (sommerso). It is sculpted with elaborate, tooled clear glass fins and a flared tail that also acts as a stable sculptural base.
Story
Venetian maestros in the 1950s captured the post-war craze for aquatic life in molten glass. Using scrap colored canes infused with gold foil, they turned aquarium creatures into glowing modernist centerpieces.
Maker / Origin
While often unsigned, pieces in this style were popularized by legendary Venetian glasshouses such as A.V.E.M. (Arte Vetraria Muranese), Fratelli Toso, and Archimede Seguso. These family-run island furnaces pushed the boundaries of hot-working techniques, becoming world-famous luxury exports during Italy's mid-century economic miracle.
Condition & Value
The glass shows bright clarity and no apparent breaks or chips to the delicate ribbed fin edges or tail tips in the photo. Excellent condition with zero chips on the fin tips commands the strongest collector interest.
