Overview

A striking collection of deep ruby red pressed glass featuring the '1876 Cape Cod' pattern, inspired by the classic Sandwich glass of the Victorian era. This set includes various serving pieces and drinkware characterized by a dense, ornate diamond and floral motif.

Story

Launched in 1975 to celebrate Avon's upcoming centennial, this glass wasn't sold in stores. It was a door-to-door sensation, bringing the elegance of 19th-century 'Sandwich' glass into suburban American homes through the local Avon lady.

Maker / Origin

While branded by Avon, these were manufactured by the Wheaton Glass Company, masters of the craft in New Jersey. They utilized high-quality formulas to achieve that 'Royal Ruby' color, which remains one of the most recognizable glass hues in American history.

Condition & Value

The glass appears to be in good vintage condition with no visible chips in the photos. Some surface scratches or 'flea bites' on the rims are common for this set and can slightly reduce value. Excellent condition commands a premium.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
