Overview

A hand-hammered brass decorative tray featuring a central floral medallion surrounded by four elephants in a circular procession.

Story

Following the end of the British Raj, Indian metalwork saw a massive surge in popularity as 'exotic' home decor in the West. These trays were often the centerpiece of a mid-century living room, frequently perched atop folding wooden 'spider' legs to serve as a portable coffee table.

Maker / Origin

While typically unsigned, these pieces were produced by skilled artisans in metalworking hubs like Moradabad, known as the 'Pital Nagri' or Brass City of India.

Condition & Value

The tray shows a healthy aged patina with some oxidation in the recessed areas, which provides excellent contrast for the design. There are no visible major dents or cracks. The hanging loop on the back is a great feature, allowing it to be displayed as wall art.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
