Overview
This is a delightful Art Deco era single-tier tidbit or sandwich tray, featuring a cream-glazed square ceramic plate with stylized geometric embossing and a colorful floral transfer border. It is anchored by a classic central chrome-plated carrying handle, designed to be passed around a parlor during afternoon tea or cocktail hour.
Story
During the 1930s, the ritual of afternoon tea evolved into a stylish social showcase. Hostesses used clever, portable 'tidbit' trays like this one to serve delicate finger sandwiches and pastries with effortless, single-handed grace.
Maker / Origin
While 'Sheffield' is historically famous for English metalwork and silver plate, the mark 'Sheffield Ware' on ceramics was used by several 20th-century potteries (including some based in Ohio's rich clay district and others in Staffordshire, England) to evoke a sense of traditional British quality and domestic refinement.
Condition & Value
The ceramic plate shows light, age-appropriate crazing in the glaze on the underside, which is very common for earthenware of this vintage. The chrome handle shows minor surface wear but remains bright; overall in very good, usable vintage condition. Excellent preservation of the floral transfer border.
