Overview

A beautiful, authentic Russian lacquer miniature box hand-painted in oil over a shimmering, reflective underlay. The lid depicts 'Park in Boldino'—the historic estate of legendary Russian poet Alexander Pushkin—rendered in the classic, luminous Fedoskino style with its characteristic glowing light and rich autumn foliage.

Story

Hand-painted in 1982, this box depicts the historic Boldino estate where poet Alexander Pushkin wrote his masterpieces. It was sold through the exclusive Soviet 'Beriozka' hard-currency shops, designed only for foreign visitors.

Maker / Origin

The village of Fedoskino is the oldest center of Russian lacquer miniature painting, active since the late 18th century.

Condition & Value

The box is in very good vintage condition with the original paper label, price tag, and OTK quality control stamp intact inside. There is minor edge wear to the lacquer on the lower corners of the box lid, but the painted surface remains bright, glossy, and free of major crazing or cracks.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
