Overview

A refined Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku) executed in the traditional Nihonga style on silk or paper, depicting lush blooming peonies alongside doves and garden rocks. It bears a signature and seal on the lower right, traditional silk brocade mounting, and wood roller ends.

Story

Nihonga emerged in Meiji Japan as a deliberate revolution to preserve traditional Japanese painting techniques against westernization. This artwork uses natural mineral pigments and ground shell to create luminous, textured botanicals.

Maker / Origin

Maeda Seison (1885–1977) was a towering figure in 20th-century Nihonga painting, designated a Cultural Hero of Japan and recipient of the Order of Culture. Known for his masterly brushwork and historical subjects as well as delicate flora and fauna, authentic works by Seison are highly prized in major Japanese art auctions.

Condition & Value

The scroll appears well-preserved with light creasing along the horizontal fold lines and minor toning consistent with age. Mount and silk brocade border appear intact without major tears or foxing. Excellent preservation boosts appeal.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
