Overview
An exquisite Chinese porcelain charger decorated in the delicate doucai technique, depicting scholars engaged in a game of Weiqi (Go) within a rocky landscape. The underside bears a six-character apocryphal Chenghua mark, a common practice of reverence and prestige during the Kangxi reign.
Story
During the Kangxi reign, Chinese scholars celebrated the 'Four Arts'—music, painting, calligraphy, and the strategic game of Weiqi shown here. This plate was designed to reflect the ultimate intellectual lifestyle of the imperial elite.
Maker / Origin
Crafted in Jingdezhen, the porcelain capital of the world, where generations of anonymous master potters worked under imperial supervision. These artisans perfected the complex balance of underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze enamel colors to satisfy the demanding tastes of the court and wealthy literati.
Condition & Value
The porcelain appears to be in excellent condition with no visible cracks, chips, or major glaze wear. The enamels remain vibrant with beautiful iridescence visible under close inspection. Excellent condition greatly preserves the premium value of imperial-style wares.
