Overview
This is a magnificent set of three Japanese hanging scrolls (kakemono) depicting the legendary heroes of the Three Kingdoms: the red-robed emperor Liu Bei flanked by his sworn brothers, the formidable general Guan Yu with his guandao polearm, and the fierce warrior Zhang Fei.
Story
During the 14th century, the Chinese epic 'Romance of the Three Kingdoms' captured the Japanese imagination. These scrolls depict the famous Oath of the Peach Garden, where three warriors swore eternal brotherhood to restore peace.
Maker / Origin
While the scrolls bear signatures and red seal marks, the specific artist is currently unidentified, which is common for late 19th and early 20th-century Japanese painters working in classical Chinese styles (Kanga or Nanga schools). These artists dedicated their lives to mastering traditional brushwork, often paying homage to historical masterpieces rather than seeking individual fame.
Condition & Value
The scrolls appear to be in very good antique condition with minor creasing, light toning, and minimal foxing consistent with age. The silk mounts and roller ends (jiku) appear intact and well-preserved. Excellent preservation of the original colors significantly helps maintain the value.
