Overview
An iconic piece of American Mid-Century design, this spherical insulated server features a warm copper-anodized finish and regal lion-head ring handles. Originally designed by Handley-Brown and popularized by West Bend, it became a staple of the 1950s suburban cocktail hour.
Story
Post-war America fell in love with the 'cocktail hour,' and this server was its crown jewel. While most were chrome, this copper version offered a warmer, more luxurious look for high-end entertaining. It kept ice frozen or meatballs hot for hours.
Maker / Origin
The West Bend Aluminum Company was a pioneer in American kitchenware, founded in 1911. They became household names by transforming industrial aluminum and copper into stylish, affordable art for the modern kitchen, surviving the war years by pivoting to 20mm shells before returning to their beloved 'Penguin' designs.
Condition & Value
The exterior shows minor surface scratches consistent with age. The lion-head handles appear intact, but the cream-colored seal shows some darkening. Scratches on the copper finish generally reduce value by 20%.
