Overview
An exquisite Japanese lacquer panel featuring a high-relief carved figure of a celestial maiden (Tennin) riding a crane. The central figure is masterfully constructed from carved bone or ivory, mother-of-pearl, and gilt lacquer, set against a deep black lacquer ground within a heavily carved wooden frame.
Story
During the late 19th century, Japanese artists captivated the Western world with their breathtaking Shibayama work. This panel depicts a Buddhist celestial nymph riding a crane, symbolizing longevity and the journey to the pure land.
Maker / Origin
While unsigned, this piece is executed in the famous Shibayama style, named after the Shibayama family who pioneered the technique of inlaying semi-precious materials into lacquer during the Edo period. Meiji-era workshops refined this art to an extraordinary level specifically for international expositions in Europe and America.
Condition & Value
The panel shows some light surface dust and minor wear to the gilt details along the border, but the inlaid figure appears remarkably intact with no major missing pieces. The carved frame has some typical age-related drying and minor scuffs. Excellent preservation of the delicate inlay elements commands a premium.
