Overview
A masterfully carved desk accessory in the Neoclassical style, featuring a pierced ribbon-bow crest and delicate floral garlands. It houses an original Fahrenheit spirit thermometer and a circular aperture designed to hold a large 'Goliath' pocket watch or an aneroid barometer.
Story
At the turn of the 20th century, a gentleman's desk was a stage for status. This stand served as a personal 'weather station,' allowing a wealthy owner to track time and temperature with the same elegance found in the French court.
Maker / Origin
While likely unsigned, this piece reflects the elite craftsmanship of Parisian or London workshops like Asprey or Tahan. These artisans favored boxwood (bois de citron) for its incredible density, which allowed them to achieve detail as fine as ivory carving.
Condition & Value
The wood is in excellent condition with a warm, honey-colored patina. The thermometer is intact and appears functional. The absence of the original clock or barometer in the upper aperture is the only notable detraction. Condition is excellent for its age.
