Overview
This is a striking mid-century silver brooch depicting a stylized leaping stag, decorated in the traditional Korean cloisonné enamel technique known as Chilbo. It features vibrant turquoise-green enamel with intricate wire-work spirals, accented by a bold red stripe and black enamel along the lower body and antlers. Small dangling silver star charms hang playfully from the underside of the stag's arched antlers.
Story
In Korean lore, the stag is one of the Shipjangsaeng—ten symbols of eternal youth. Artisans in post-war Seoul crafted these vibrant pieces to share their ancient 'seven treasures' enamel technique with a curious global market.
Maker / Origin
While unsigned, this piece was crafted in a specialized Korean 'Chilbo' workshop. Chilbo, meaning 'seven treasures' in reference to the precious materials its colors emulate, has been practiced on the Korean peninsula for over a thousand years, experiencing a beautiful mid-century revival as artisans adapted traditional motifs into wearable modern jewelry.
Condition & Value
The brooch is in very good vintage condition. The enamel appears intact with no major chips or cracks visible. The silver on the reverse has a heavy, natural patina that many collectors prefer, though it could be polished. The pin clasp is intact and functional, and the dangling star charms are still attached.
