Overview

This is an exquisite, hand-painted porcelain nappy or handled dish featuring delicate white water lilies and a heavily gilded, ruffled rim. Produced in the legendary porcelain region of Limoges, France, it represents the height of late Victorian and Art Nouveau tabletop elegance.

Story

In the late 19th century, American importers Bawo & Dotter established their own decorating studio in Limoges, France, to capture the lucrative US luxury market. This dish, with its fluid Art Nouveau lines, was hand-decorated by skilled artisans to grace the parlor tables of Gilded Age homes.

Maker / Origin

Bawo & Dotter was a prominent New York importing firm that established the 'Elite Works' factory in Limoges in 1892. They became famous for their exceptionally fine, translucent white porcelain blanks, which were then hand-painted with soft floral motifs and rich gold paste by master decorators before being shipped across the Atlantic.

Condition & Value

The porcelain body appears intact with no visible cracks. There is light, expected wear to the gold gilding along the ruffled rim and handle from handling over the past century. Excellent preservation of the central hand-painted floral design.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
