Overview

A classic hand-woven Nantucket lightship basket purse featuring a tightly woven rattan body, a solid wooden base and lid, and a swing handle. The lid is adorned with a central oval plaque featuring an engraved scene of ducks in flight, secured with a traditional bone peg latch.

Story

Born on 19th-century whaling outposts, these baskets evolved from utilitarian shipboard storage into the ultimate mid-century status symbol for wealthy summer residents of Nantucket.

Maker / Origin

While popularized by master weaver Jose Formoso Reyes in the 1940s, many talented island artisans crafted these purses throughout the 20th century. Each maker left subtle signatures in their weave patterns, choice of woods, and the style of their scrimshaw or carved lid plaques.

Condition & Value

The basket appears to be in excellent vintage condition with a warm, even patina. The weaving looks tight and intact without broken staves, and the handle and latch mechanism are fully functional. Excellent preservation of the weave structure commands a premium in the collector market.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
