Overview
A classic French devotional medal struck in gilded brass or bronze, commemorating the 1858 apparitions at the Grotto of Massabielle. The obverse depicts the Virgin Mary appearing to Saint Bernadette, while the reverse features a detailed architectural rendering of the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception and the Rosary Basilica.
Story
In 1858, a young girl named Bernadette saw a 'lady in white' in a remote cave. This tiny medal was a pilgrim's badge of honor, carried home from the Pyrenees to prove they had visited the site of the world's most famous miracle spring.
Maker / Origin
While many of these were produced by specialized religious workshops like SERAL in Lourdes, the diamond-shaped hallmark on the reverse suggests a specific French 'bijoutier' or medalist. These artisans used high-pressure steel dies to capture architectural details so fine you can count the windows on the Basilica's spire.
Condition & Value
The medal shows honest 'pocket wear' consistent with being handled during prayer. There is some loss to the gold plating on the high points of the Basilica and the Virgin's robes, which reveals the warm bronze/brass underneath. This patina actually enhances its character as a used devotional object.
