Overview

This is a classic late-1960s Seiko 5 automatic wristwatch featuring a beautiful silver sunburst dial and a 23-jewel movement. It showcases the distinctive Daini Seikosha lightning bolt logo above the six o'clock position, indicating its production in one of Seiko's legendary competing internal factories.

Story

In 1963, Seiko launched the 'Seiko 5' to create an ultra-reliable, everyday watch for the active 1960s generation. The '5' represented five key attributes: automatic winding, day-date display, water resistance, a recessed crown, and a durable case. This specific model carries the Daini factory lightning bolt, representing a fierce internal rivalry that pushed Japanese watchmaking to beat the Swiss.

Maker / Origin

Founded in 1881 by Kintaro Hattori, Seiko revolutionized global watchmaking. To foster innovation, the company split its production into two competing entities: Suwa Seikosha and Daini Seikosha. This internal rivalry was friendly but fierce, driving both factories to produce some of the most accurate, robust, and beautifully engineered mechanical movements in horological history.

Condition & Value

The watch appears to be in very good vintage condition with light, honest wear on the stainless steel case and bezel. The dial and hands show minimal signs of aging, and the crystal is remarkably clear. Excellent mechanical functionality and a recent service would push this toward the higher end of the value range.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
