Overview

An exquisite double-gourd shaped porcelain covered box, beautifully decorated in the Famille Rose palette. The lid features a scholar seated by a cascading waterfall observing a rising dragon, while the underside displays a large longevity peach bearing an iron-red Qianlong seal mark.

Story

Double-gourd shapes have been revered in China for centuries as symbols of longevity and portals to mystical realms. This box depicts a scholar summoning or observing a dragon from the churning waters, capturing the ancient Daoist quest for immortality and harmony with nature.

Maker / Origin

While bearing the imperial seal mark of the Qianlong Emperor (who reigned from 1735 to 1796), this box was likely crafted by highly skilled artisans in Jingdezhen during the late Qing Dynasty or the Republic Period. These workshops specialized in reviving the complex, refined enameling techniques of the 18th-century imperial golden age to meet intense global demand.

Condition & Value

The porcelain box appears to be in excellent condition with no visible cracks, chips, or major enamel loss. The gilding on the rim shows minor, expected age-related wear. Excellent condition like this greatly helps preserve its value.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
