Centuries ago in Japan, gold leaf was applied around landscape paintings to catch dim candlelight inside samurai castles and estates. These surviving panels reveal an ethereal mountain pavilion shrouded in golden clouds.

Maker / Origin

While unsigned on these individual surviving sections, this work belongs to the Kano School tradition, the official lineage of painters who served the Tokugawa shogunate and daimyo lords for over three centuries. Masters in this style balanced bold ink-wash brushwork with shimmering gold leaf to convey spiritual elevation and aristocratic refinement.

Condition & Value

The panels are unmounted and detached from their original wooden frame, showing edge chipping, minor tears, creases, and surface toning typical of age. The dismounting reduces value significantly compared to a fully intact screen.
