Overview
This is the first trade edition of Geoffrey Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales' featuring the iconic illustrations of Rockwell Kent. Rendered into modern English by J.U. Nicolson, this volume brought Kent's bold, woodcut-style imagery to a mass audience during the Great Depression.
Story
In 1930, a massive two-volume limited edition of this book cost a fortune. By 1934, this Garden City edition made Kent's 'heroic' art accessible to everyday Americans. It transformed a medieval classic into a masterpiece of 20th-century design.
Maker / Origin
Rockwell Kent was a superstar of American art, known for his rugged adventures in Alaska and Greenland. His stark, architectural style defined the look of the 1930s, and he was so influential that he designed everything from Moby Dick illustrations to U.S. postage stamps.
Condition & Value
The dust jacket shows visible chipping and wear at the head and foot of the spine, which is typical for its age. The internal pages appear clean, and the binding seems sturdy. The jacket wear reduces the value from 'Fine' levels but its presence still adds significant value.
