Overview
An extraordinary, highly sculptural tripod sake cup washer (sakazuki-dai/haisen) featuring a dramatic high-relief (taka-ukibori) exterior of crashing waves and flying plovers. The interior is a masterclass in polychrome enameling, depicting swimming goldfish and a fully three-dimensional bridge spanning the vessel, topped by a meticulously detailed, gilded turtle.
Story
Crafted in the 19th century, this vessel transformed a simple banquet ritual into a miniature aquatic theater. Guests would rinse their sake cups in this basin, watching the water ripple over hand-painted goldfish while a gilded ceramic turtle looked on from its bridge.
Maker / Origin
While unsigned, this piece represents the pinnacle of Seto ware's transition from utilitarian pottery to highly decorative, sculptural art. During this era, Seto kilns pushed the boundaries of porcelain chemistry and modeling, preparing to stun the Western world at the great World's Fairs with their technical virtuosity.
Condition & Value
The piece appears to be in remarkable condition given its extreme fragility. There is minor wear to the gold leaf on the turtle's shell and the orange-red rim, which is expected for its age. The absence of visible chips or repairs on the delicate bridge structure dramatically preserves its value.
