Overview

This is a charming antique cast metal trinket box, often called a caddy or jewelry casket, featuring a embossed relief lid depicting an 18th-century salon courting scene. The sides are decorated with flowing acanthus leaves and scrolling foliage typical of the Art Nouveau Revival style.

Story

Around the turn of the 20th century, European and American society fell madly in love with idealized 18th-century French romantic scenes. Manufacturers created these ornate metal caskets for vanity tables to hold rings, collar pins, and small keepsakes.

Maker / Origin

While currently unsigned under the tape, companies like Jennings Brothers, Benedict Manufacturing, and various French foundries specialized in cast spelter and bronze vanity wares during this era. They used detailed sand-casting techniques to bring intricate narrative relief scenes to life for middle-class homes.

Condition & Value

The box appears structural intact with nice age-appropriate patina and wear to the gilt finish. The clear tape across the top and sides should be removed carefully to avoid pulling off any remaining gilt or patina surface.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
