Overview

This is a magnificent Chinese celadon shallow bowl featuring carved floral or lotus petal motifs beneath a thick, sea-green glaze. It features an unglazed stacking ring (biscuit ring) in the well and a bound metal rim, characteristic of historical Chinese ceramic preservation and trade practices.

Story

Centuries ago in Zhejiang, kilns fired thousands of celadon wares praised for mimicking precious jade. The unglazed ring inside allowed potters to stack dishes efficiently in the kiln without glazes fusing together.

Maker / Origin

Longquan kilns produced some of China's most famous export ceramics for over a millennium. Craftsmen masterfully controlled iron-rich glazes and reduction firings to produce the iconic translucent green jade-like hues.

Condition & Value

Appears to be in good antique condition. The metal rim binding appears stable, preserving the edge; minor glaze imperfections and firing spots are typical of historic kiln production.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues

Best Venue

Specialty auction or a focused dealer with buyers already in this lane.
