Overview
This is a heavy, pressed-glass inkwell featuring a dramatic, deeply molded swirl or 'hurricane' pattern that catches the light beautifully. It retains its original matching swirl-top lid and features a classic rayed starburst pattern on the underside of the base.
Story
Before ballpoint pens, writing a letter was a slow, deliberate ritual. This heavy glass inkwell sat on a Victorian writing desk, holding the dark ink that captured family secrets, business deals, and love letters in elegant cursive.
Maker / Origin
During the late 19th century, American glass factories in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia competed fiercely, producing thousands of innovative pressed-glass patterns. While often unsigned, these utilitarian art pieces were designed by skilled mold-makers who elevated everyday office supplies into tabletop sculptures.
Condition & Value
The glass shows excellent clarity with no major clouding or sickness. There is minor shelf wear on the bottom starburst and typical tiny fleabites around the inner rim of the inkwell and the lid's flange where they meet. Having both matching pieces intact greatly preserves its value.
