Overview
This is an original lithographed paper label from a box of Richmond Straight Cut No. 1 cigarettes, featuring the iconic dandy mascot and elegant Victorian typography. Produced during the transition period when the American Tobacco Company absorbed the pioneering Allen & Ginter firm, it represents a crucial milestone in the birth of modern brand advertising.
Story
In the late 1880s, Richmond's Allen & Ginter revolutionized global marketing by inserting illustrated cardboard stiffeners into their paper cigarette packs. These inserts accidentally birthed the world's very first trading cards, changing collecting forever.
Maker / Origin
Formed in 1875 by John F. Allen and Lewis Ginter, Allen & Ginter was a powerhouse of tobacco marketing, famous for creating the first cigarette cards featuring baseball players, actors, and flags. In 1890, the company became one of the five founding partners of James Buchanan Duke's massive monopoly, the American Tobacco Company, which is noted on this label as 'successor'.
Condition & Value
The label appears to be in very good condition with sharp corners, strong colors, and minimal staining. It is mounted or framed against a dark background, which has protected it from excessive handling, though light exposure should be monitored to prevent the green ink from fading. Excellent preservation of the delicate paper edges.
