Overview
An exquisite Japanese Kutani porcelain bowl featuring a vibrant red-ground exterior decorated with scrolling white peonies and gold highlights. The interior showcases two asymmetrical fan-shaped reserves: one depicting a soaring, colorful phoenix (Hō-ō) amidst clouds, and the other illustrating a traditional pine tree with plum blossoms.
Story
During the Meiji period, Japanese ceramicists captivated Western collectors by blending ancient mythology with brilliant, export-friendly color palettes. This bowl features the mythical Hō-ō phoenix, a creature said to appear only in times of peace and prosperity.
Maker / Origin
While the specific workshop remains unidentified, the underside features a green-enameled square seal mark containing the character 'Fuku' (meaning good fortune or happiness), a classic mark used by various high-quality Kutani workshops in Ishikawa Prefecture during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Condition & Value
The bowl appears to be in very good antique condition. There is minor, expected wear to the gold gilding along the rim and the exterior peony highlights, which is typical for porcelain of this age. No visible cracks or chips are apparent in the photos. Excellent preservation of the gilding commands a premium.
