In the early 20th century, guitarists were struggling to be heard over the loud banjos and fiddles of string bands, leading Martin to create a body size so large they named it after the HMS Dreadnought, a massive British battleship.

Christian Frederick Martin Sr. emigrated from Germany to New York in 1833, bringing elite European luthiery to American shores before settling in Nazareth, PA.
