1 uploaded photo

Overview

A hand-painted ceramic vessel featuring the heraldic crest of the Contrada della Giraffa, one of the seventeen historic districts of Siena.

Story

Every July and August, the city of Siena transforms into a medieval battlefield for the Palio, a horse race that has run for centuries. This vessel represents the Contrada della Giraffa (the Ward of the Giraffe), a district that traces its identity back to the early 15th century.

Maker / Origin

While likely produced in a workshop in Siena or the nearby ceramic center of Montelupo, this piece carries the DNA of the Italian Maiolica tradition.

Condition & Value

The glaze appears bright and the colors are well-preserved with no visible chips or 'crazing' (fine cracks in the glaze) in the primary image. The hand-painted details remain crisp, which is essential for maintaining the value of decorative maiolica. Excellent condition generally commands the higher end of the estimate.
