Overview

A large, oval earthenware platter featuring a sophisticated 'Japonisme' design in black transferware.

Story

On January 3, 1882, the design for this specific pattern was officially registered with the British Patent Office, as evidenced by the 'Kite Mark' on the reverse.

Maker / Origin

While the impressed maker's mark is faint, the registration diamond points directly to the prestigious Staffordshire pottery district.

Condition & Value

The platter shows significant 'crazing' (a fine network of cracks in the glaze) and some minor staining/pitting on the reverse, which is entirely consistent with… Large serving platters in Aesthetic Movement patterns are highly sought after by collectors of 'black and white' transferware.
