Overview

A striking decorative mask hand-carved from translucent Mexican onyx and meticulously inlaid with iridescent abalone shell.

Story

During the mid-20th century, Mexico experienced a massive cultural revival known as 'Indigenismo,' which celebrated the country's pre-Hispanic roots through art and craftsmanship.

Maker / Origin

While the specific workshop is unidentified, this piece originates from a long tradition of Mexican lapidary families who specialize in 'Mexican Onyx' (technically a form of banded calcite).

Condition & Value

The stone appears to be in excellent condition with no visible fractures or significant chips. The abalone inlays are all present and retain a high degree of luster. Minor surface dust in the recesses is consistent with age and can be easily cleaned. Excellent preservation of the polish.
