Overview
This is the fossilized exoskeleton of a trilobite, an extinct marine arthropod that ruled the ocean floors for nearly 300 million years.
Story
Four hundred and fifty million years ago, the ground you are standing on didn't exist in its current form, and this creature was scuttling across a muddy seabed in a shallow prehistoric ocean.
Maker / Origin
Nature is the craftsman here, utilizing a process called permineralization where mineral-rich water seeps into the pores of the organic matter, turning bone or shell into stone.
Condition & Value
The specimen shows natural weathering and is missing the very tip of the head and tail sections. The segmentation is well-preserved, though the surface texture is somewhat grainy due to the sandstone matrix it was encased in.
